Acquisitions News! Rio Sunrise, a contemporary romance novella

Great news!


Freya's Bower has just acquired my IR contemporary romance novella entitled Rio Sunrise.



Here is the 'unofficial' blurb: Jayla Mitchelson had no idea how much her life would change when she accepted the biggest photography position of her career to Rio de Janeiro. She had no idea it would put her right in contact with one of the most irresistible and closed off bachelors in the business, Eric Jansen. Despite his controlled demeanor, the chemistry between them is undeniable as Eric shows her the culture of Brazil and the new development he's building in Rio. After the job is done, Jayla doesn't know whether or not Eric will make a bid to entice her to stay with him.

Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore

2010 - Young Adult Reading Challenge #10

What a charming debut! I heard about Magic Under Glass like many other readers during the book cover debate. I'm glad that Bloomsbury changed their cover to reflect the heroine's dark complexion. It took me a doozy of a hunt to find the new cover because I wanted to show my support for diversity in publishing. Publishers need to realize that there's nothing wrong with diverse characters and covers. It may not make as much or sell as much as characters that are more in the mainstream but the more POC characters are placed on covers, the more mainstream they will become.

But I digress.

The high praise this book has been getting proves that a book such as this can be enjoyed by all. Magic Under Glass reads like a fairytale or a historical novel that could have taken place a long time ago in a world much like our own. Nimira is a capable heroine who reminds me of the strong yet gentle heroines that Austen and the Bronte sisters have brought into the realm of literary classics. There is a bit of fae mythology that I really enjoy but while we don't get to interact with the fae, I enjoyed seeing things from the human perspective this time around. A great war is on the horizon between the fae and the human governments. There is prejudice, class issues, action and intrigue throughout the book. Although the main arc is set up here to make way for the sequels, there's enough story here to sustain a nice beginning. I look forward to seeing more of Nimira and the automaton Erris with whom she may have a potential relationship.

Ms. Dolamore has a magical debut on her hands that will satisfy any fantasy romance and historical reader looking for a modern written fairytale.

Reading Update!

Well, I'm a bit behind my reading challenge schedule but that's okay because I'm enjoying some of my current stuff. I was planning on reading a recent paperback I bought for the Friends to Lovers May theme (it's called The Other Woman by Patricia Kay). April was SFR/SFF/F month and I read Time Hunters: Warrior by Angela Knight which was an okay read after an explosive start up. I'm a bit late, but that takes care of April and now I'm ready to tackle May.

Now, I'm currently listening to Faith Hunter's Skinwalker (first in her Jane Yellowrock series) while reading the ARC of Manifest (YA paranormal) a non-fic and Magic Under Glass (a YA fantasy I'm really digging). Good stuff.

Next Up On the Roster

Now that I have the 'Mortal's' digital release behind me, I'm going to take a mini break to catch up before I start prepping for the print rush.

On the roster is a few projects that I've been tossing around. A short IR contemporary with a Rio theme (that may become a novel if I can work it), two fantasy stories: one that I wrote for an anthology but now for a magazine and the other originally intended for the magazine, an IR YA surfer romance, a noir romance that needs to be rewritten a bit and, of course, the elusive rewrite of Cimmerian City into A Feast of Shadows. A lot of things have happened since I last released CC in 2007. The world has changed a lot and I've written the second part which will be integrated into the first. The core essence of the story will stay the same but I have some commentary that I would love to add.

Okie dokie. Time to grab the new spiffy word count meters and get to work. I have a few panels at Coyote Con that I'm excited to attend tomorrow. I'm hoping it'll get me in the writing mood along with some episodes of Writing Excuses which I've become addicted to (thanks to a writing buddy's suggestion). Sometimes the simple act of listening to a writing related podcast that covers different aspects of story structure can help get my brain thinking on my own story. I'm hoping this is the case to get back in the game this weekend. :-)
