Parallax by Jon F. Merz ~ A Recommended Read

5/5 Wow! What an excellent thriller!

Parallax is my second fiction read by Jon F. Merz after I got a taste of his short story and I'm definitely hooked. This was an awesome thriller with lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I love stories that take me off guard and deal with complex characters that don't seem as if they're who they are, only to turn your expectations of them right on the side.

January Author Spotlight on Nolwynn Ardennes

We're kicking off the 2010 spotlights with a special guest here at A Writer's Dream. I'm a big fan of her work already and am jazzed to introduce Nolwynn Ardennes to AWD.

Nolwynn Ardennes is the other pen name of author Aasiyah Qamar. Married with a son and a stepson, she resides on the island of Mauritius where she tries her best to masquerade as a homemaker and domestic goddess. While Aasiyah sets her stories on this beautiful island, Nolwynn touches base with another place that is very close to her heart: London and England in general, as well as other big European cities.

Bookstores and Book Placement ~ Some Nice Primers

2 articles (plus an older one) on bookstores have recently come to my attention and I thought it'd be good to catalog them.

Most readers don't know that books in bookstores are meticulously placed either by real estate bought up by the NY publishers or by certain distribution deals made between publishers, distributors and bookstores. As with any business, there's a lot of things going on in book land and most of it depends on who you know and what you do to get your book placed in certain places. It's all interesting reading if you're into book trends and the current state of the publishing industry.

Tweaking the Blog & A Book Contest to Enter

Please excuse me while I update the blog a bit. Since we've entered a new year, I thought I'd do a little upgrade. The skin I was working with looked a bit claustrophobic and I'm not too sure about the frou frous around the headings but I'll give a change here and there until it looks smooth. In the meanime I'll keep blogging.

This skin has some nice spiffy links for subscription in case you want to follow AWD in a reader. Just click the link above to subscribe or click the email link on the ride sidebar to follow via email. More goodies to come as I get acquainted with this new blogger update.

Don't forget to check out Juliana Stone's current contests to win an ARC of her upcoming release His Darkest Hunger. Her book is on my 2010 books I'm looking forward to and I can't until the March release!

Check out Juliana's website for more details on her series and other upcoming works!

Complete Vampire-y Randomness

I checked out the Vampire Name Generator located here and got this:

The Great Archives determine you to have gone by the identity:
Musette d'Angoulême

Known in some parts of the world as:
Kiku of Austria

The Great Archives Record:
This one returned to revenge [sic] the death of its children. Stay away, it is vicious.

I may have to write about her as a writing prompt. ;-)

Blog surprise coming soon. To be continued.

Enter 2010

A new decade, a new year. It's time to start cleaning up house for new faves of the year. I'm looking forward to discovering new goodies to add to my reading and movie list.

I saw a blurb over on NPR About Louisa May Alcott's life. Girlie had a wild streak! And it looked like she didn't think too highly on the "moral pap" of Little Women and such literature "but it paid well". ;-) It'll be interesting to see the woman behind the novel. I'm interrested in learning more about her pulp fiction writings. Wonder if I can get my hands on those...

Here are five things you may not know about Miss Alcott:

Here's the PBS American Masters Trailer:

Since the lull of the end of the year has passed, it's time to start getting back in gear. The novel writing workshop will be starting up, I need to start blogging more in between projects, and some deadlines have gotten closer than they were just a few days ago. Before I grab too many 2010 reads, I want to read more of my TBR pile to get that down. The pile alone on my bed is threatening my sleeping space so I'll have to work on tackling that.

New goodies coming up this month for paranormal fans!

In the movies is the Ethan Hawke futuristic paranormal vampire flick Daybreakers. Yay! I've been waiting like crazy for this one.

Blurb: Two-time Academy Award nominee® Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

Oh, I do love that trailer. :-) Daybreakers premieres next Friday, January 8th, 2010.

Next up from across the pond, it's Season 2 of Being Human.

The show last left off on a pretty big cliffhanger so I'm eager to see how they get out of this one. The trailer is pretty sparse but there's some other mini vids available for viewing. If you're a behind the scenes junkie like me, I'm sure you'd like these. :-)

For more, check out the list of Being Human goodies at Youtube. I'm digging the song which I heard is called Howl by Florence and the Machine. Can't wait to see this one!
